Today marks the first day that President Joe Biden starts his presidency, and it has been a loonngg time coming. I still remember quite clearly, 4 years ago, when the election results were announced, and I cried. I cried for myself, I cried for my children, and I cried for a nation that could condone a man of all the misguided ideals he stood for and elect him as our 45th President.
Today, I finally let out the breath that I had not known I’d even been holding in for the last 4 years. Today, my country redeemed itself of its misguided choice from 4 years prior. Today, I was able to say, once again, I am proud to be an American.
It’s a bit ironic that the way I feel today is similar to how I felt 4 years ago; it all feels surreal. The first ever Black AND South Asian woman has been inducted into office as the Vice President of America. It’s hard to even fathom and it’s not unlike how I felt when President Obama was sworn into office. We have made progress but we still have a long journey ahead of us.
